Patient Care
Weight Control Clinic
The Obesity Clinic was established at UAMS in 1995. In 1997, it was renamed "The Weight Control Clinic" to emphasize long-term weight maintenance and a healthy lifestyle. The clinic's services are available to anyone seeking professional medical assistance with weight and health management.
The Weight
Control Clinic* employs
a multidisciplinary team of doctors, nurses, dieticians, and other health professionals.
Patients are expected to attend weekly classes in behavior modification and
nutrition, which are led by dieticians with specialized training in weight
management. Faculty members of the endocrinology division supervise the classes.
Depending on the amount of weight that needs to be lost, medical complications,
and other factors, patients may be placed on a diet involving dietary supplements,
low-fat foods, or combinations of supplements and food. Medications are used
to assist with weight loss under circumstances where they are medically indicated.
Referral to surgeons is available, and will be arranged as medically indicated.
Overall, the Weight Control Clinic methods are used in an individualized fashion.
Referrals: Patients with diagnostic or management problems in endocrinology
are welcome by referral. Referring physicians should send current records,
X-rays, blood work-up, etc., prior to the patients' appointments. Direct all
referrals to the Office of Referrals and Appointments (501-686-8000).
